The hair on our heads isn't just there for looks. It keeps us warm by preserving heat. The hair in the nose, ears, and around the eyes protects these sensitive areas from dust and other small particles. Eyebrows and eyelashes protect eyes by decreasing the amount of light and particles that go into them. The fine hair that covers the body provides warmth and protects the skin. Hair also cushions the body against injury.

137: HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN
Hair loss in female occurs in more than one pattern. Hair Loss is caused by the actions of two enzymes; aromatase (which is found predominantly in women) and 5-a reductase (which is found in both women and men). The reason that women experience hair loss during and after menopause is that their estrogen levels decline. Female pattern alopecia affects approximately one-third of all susceptible women, but is most commonly seen after menopause. Common or "hereditary" baldness in women, also called female pattern alopecia, is genetic and can come either the mother's or father's side of the family. Various forms of estrogen can "oppose" androgens and thereby reduce their availability to the cell, by blocking androgen receptors. A woman who notices the beginning of hair loss may not be sure if the loss is going to be temporary or permanent - for example, if there has been a recent event such as pregnancy or illness that may be associated with temporary hair thinning.

138: SHAMPOO TIPS
A little "How To" - First, thoroughly saturate scalp and hair using warm or cool water (hot water tends to dry out hair and scalp). Apply a small amount of shampoo (about the size of a quarter) to palm and rub hands together to evenly distribute. Now apply shampoo to scalp with the balls of your fingers. The primary objective of shampooing is to clean your scalp, not wrestle your hair, so concentrate on massaging gently and allow suds to be distributed throughout hair while rinsing. It's not necessary to do the "rinse and repeat" routine unless you have an oily scalp.

140: Shampoo Ingredient Sodium Laureth Sulfate
In recent months there has been a myth making its way around the net that sodium laureth sulfate causes cancer. At some level that is probably true. It is also probably true that if you poke yourself in the eye every day with a bratwurst, after 20 or 30 years the affected area will become cancerous. Other than that, the rumor is nothing more than that, rumor, with no basis in reality or science. Sodium laureth sulfate is a surfactant. Its purpose in shampoo is to act as a cleaning agent and to create bubbles. It is one of the gentlest chemicals on the market today and one of the more expensive too. It is infinitely safer than ammonium laurel sulfate, the most common surfactant, which is used primarily by grocery store level shampoos because it is cheap and creates a ton of bubbles.
